Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Lou (rhymes with wow!) – ★★★½
“An entertaining and at times very icky Shaw Brothers possession flick from director Kuei Chih-Hung. Despite the movie failing to reach the batsh*t insanity of his The Boxer’s Omen, it is still pretty wild. Kinda weird how the moral of so many of these supernatural Hong Kong movies seems to be: don’t f*ck a foreign chick because she might be a witch.” - Bob McCully – ★★★★
“Beware the brutal spells of Bewitched, aka Gu, an early 80’s Shaw Bros supernatural thriller that’ll put you in a cosmic trance then telekinetically crush your skull. The film opens with a family stumbling upon the corpse of a little girl deep in a forest. Once that image haunts your soul, the film jumps to a brisk pace as we’re delivered a delightfully convoluted story about how a man became possessed during his recent trip to Thailand and while in that possessed state he killed his own daughter. The detective on the case becomes intrigued and with the guilty man now on death row, he’s compelled to investigate further by going to Thailand. A spiritual reckoning awaits.” - Realkinoshit – ★★★★
“What makes Bewitched particularly captivating is its attention to detail in the design of the rituals and the mystical elements. The production design is a visual feast, filled with intricate sets, bold colors, and surreal imagery that heighten the sense of dread. Even though some effects might seem outdated by today’s standards, they add to the film’s charm and help create an immersive, atmospheric experience, just like the director’s most famous film, The Boxer’s Omen (though I still prefer The Boxer’s Omen). What also stands out in Bewitched is its exploration of religious practices and beliefs, especially in how it depicts the clash between modernity and traditional superstition. The film taps into deep cultural fears surrounding curses and witchcraft, making its horror both psychological and spiritual. The religious rituals, while exaggerated for cinematic effect, are steeped in a sense of authenticity that adds to the film’s unsettling power.”
