- Jaime Rebanal 🇵🇸 – ★★★★★
“Shohei Imamura’s Black Rain is without a doubt one of the most haunting films I have seen about the impact of the Hiroshima bombing ever since Alain Resnais’s Hiroshima Mon Amour. Whereas Resnais’s film shows us the perspectives regarding the impact of the bombing yet disguises it as a romance, Imamura shows us the damages of the war in such a haunting fashion to that extent I’m simply amazed not very many people know about this one. Imamura’s Vengeance Is Mine happens to be a favourite of mine and seeing that I’ve only been impressed with what I have seen out of his body of work he may just as well be one of my favourite filmmakers.”
- SilentDawn – ★★★★½
“Black Rain is a devastating film, not only for its depiction of the Hiroshima bombing and its aftermath, but for its exploration of the lingering effects on the human soul. Imamura crafts a narrative that is both intimate and expansive, focusing on a single family’s struggle while commenting on a nation’s trauma. The black-and-white cinematography adds a layer of stark realism, making the experience all the more harrowing.”

“Imamura’s Black Rain is a poignant and unflinching portrayal of the aftermath of Hiroshima. The film doesn’t shy away from the horrors faced by the survivors, yet it also highlights their resilience and determination to rebuild their lives. The performances are deeply moving, and the direction is masterful. A significant work in the canon of anti-war cinema.”
