Bobby LePire – ★★½☆☆
“Excellent cinematography + great CGI effects + cool creature designs + adventure movie all should have equaled a movie right down my alley. On paper it is, but in execution, it is as bland as possible. Not bad by any stretch, just simply lacking in that extra thing, that oomph that really pushes it into must watch territory. Maybe it is because it gets bogged down in exposition half‑ish way through; that had to be another way to integrate the needed details smoother. Maybe it is because this is just an odd riff on “Journey To The Center Of The Earth” and is a bit predictable because of that.” -
Channel Donstar (Roger B. Domian) – ★★★★☆
“This is one of those movies I bought from Asia. I knew nothing about it, but it was in 3D and I was adding to the collection.
This is one of those movies that I’m instantly captivated by, but really have no idea what is happening. It’s kind of like in two parts that somehow I eventually understood and came together. Once I got the hang of it, it’s a fun ride. Period piece filled with magic, monsters, and memorable characters. At least for me.
The 3D is pretty great and I can’t imagine watching this any other way.
I’d recommend this one, but only in 3D. I’m sure it misses something without all the action and cgi monsters coming out at you.
Great end credits song ‘Napoleon’ by Symbion Project. Look it up!” -
The Movie Matt – ★★½☆☆
“The main problem with Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe is that it is so focused on establishing a franchise, it kind of forgets to make a cohesive movie. This focus on forging a foundation gives the film a rather wonky structure and narrative flow – where most of what would be the big spectacle climax shows up before a half hour into the film – and leaves a TON of characters and subplots hanging by the finale. The film is still fun and there are great moments to be had, but it’s obvious that plot set ups and visuals are first and narrative and characters come second.”
