Reviews from Letterboxd:
-
StupidMonkey – ★★
“Not good, but not boring either. The animation is super stiff and the characters are all mischaracterized. I watched this as a kid and loved it, but now… it’s really rough. At least it’s short.” -
Bobby Kaiju – ★★½
“This is not the anime. This is the American cartoon. It’s goofy, dumb, but also kind of charming in a Saturday morning way. If you’re looking for something true to the game, look elsewhere.” -
NickTheGunslinger – ★★★
“It’s a product of its time. Weird pacing, weird voices, and tons of goofy action. But it has that nostalgic 90s cartoon charm that’s hard to hate.” -
Beast King – ★½
“The designs are butchered, the story is forgettable, and it’s only related to the games in name. Still, the Morrigan voice is kind of funny.” -
NeonGhoul – ★★
“Watch it as a time capsule of Western animation trying to adapt Japanese game characters with no clue what made them cool. It’s dumb fun if you squint hard enough.”
Meta Description:
Darkstalkers (1995) is a Western animated adaptation of the Capcom video game, following a descendant of Merlin who teams up with supernatural allies to battle the evil alien overlord Pyron and his army of Darkstalkers. With stylized 90s animation and a campy tone, this cult cartoon is a nostalgic oddity for fans of retro game adaptations.
