Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. S*xgunSukeban – ★★★☆☆
“I’ve seen my fair share of movies, but I’ve never had one ejaculate on me before. I love you too, Nikkatsu 💦 Another cool thing about Dead Blossoms, besides star Sally May, is its kickass Showa-era girl gang – The Five Worldly Women! In addition to having an amazingly funky flair for fashion and cool names like Hairpin Okei and Evening Mist Yuko, this girl gang is happy to prowl the streets mousetrapping pervert penis or zipping around on their motorcycle with sidecar terrorizing wannabe tough guys – or in their words, ‘turning the world upside down.’ What’s uncool about Dead Blossoms, however, is how dirty it does The Five Worldly Women and then switches its focus to some far less interesting male characters. I would have preferred the film to stay focused on the girl gang, but alas, it was not meant to be.”
  2. Dr.Yes – ★★★☆☆
“Hilarious to think that if you edited out all the gratuitous/aggressive sex scenes you’d have (maybe) a 30 min revenge flick. Which is a shame because there are some great performances here and some compelling characters. The movie is just more concerned with showing you boobs.”
  3. Outrage – ★★★½☆
Dead Blossoms is yet another amalgamation of Nikkatsu’s early 1970s obsessions, mainly in the form of sukeban girl gangs, yakuza, female gamblers, and rough torture – but it does these things quite well and its cast has undeniable charm and individuality. The main villain in this is an intimidating, and insatiable, bald sadist, who makes the members of his gang act like squeamish children when he really gets to it. It is also notable for featuring a performance from blonde half-white Sally Mae, who stands out a lot from the otherwise completely ethnically Japanese cast. She is great in her role as the strong-willed female gambler Oman. Visually, it is, like most of the films Nikkatsu put out at the time, very appealing, with great set design and costumes. The story is nothing special, but it is entertaining enough to keep you engaged throughout its short runtime.”
