Will Sloan – ★★★★☆
“Among its countless extraordinary sights, this kung-fu comedy by Yuen Woo-ping’s brothers contains a “watermelon monster” who tries to bite off people’s dongs. When your main problem with a movie is that it has too many amazing moments, then you have no real problems at all.” -
Lorenzo – ★★★☆☆
“The Yuen brothers are back but this time, Yuen Woo-ping is absent and Yuen Cheung-Yan takes over the directing duties. Not as offensive as Shaolin Drunkard but is less elaborate in the fighting choreography. The film is heavy on the comedy that is uneven most of the time but there are some elaborate and unique fighting sequences. The Watermelon (Banana was indicated in the subtitle of my version) monster is definitely the highlight of this film. There’s also a rat mobile and a zombie because why the heck not. They needed to get creative to come up with different variations from the earlier films.” -
Chris Brown – ★★★★☆
“I remembered the Watermelon (Banana?) Monster, the Old Devil and Yuen Cheung-Yan’s hilarious duel performance, but I forgot about all the dummies. Dummies getting thrown into walls, dummies falling down and dummies getting blown up. I tell ya, I would like those James Bond films a lot more if they used dummies.” -
Tim League – ★★★★☆
“Just got out of Weird Wednesday feeling very satisfied. 10:45pm shows are harder and harder to get to with kiddos that wake up at 7am. This one will be well worth the bleary eyes of tomorrow morning. A somewhat simple plot thread is gussied up to the max with the most dizzying array of absurdity ever committed to film: a “banana”-munching watermelon monster, porcupine-armor, a really dumb-looking giant sword fight that lasts all of one swing. a brief breakdancing interlude, a gigantic stone foot and more and more and more (plus a barrage of really dumb jokes that eventually wear down your cynicism and make you smile).” -
Acoutrama – ★★★★☆
“Kung-Fu madness with good and fun fight scenes.
The whole thing is pretty wacky and there’s hardly a quiet moment. It keeps going until the end.
If you’re a fan of well choreographed fight scenes with a good sense of humour, then this oddball is definitely worth a watch.”
