Reviews from Letterboxd:
- dirtylaundri – ★★★☆☆
“Not nearly as beautiful as BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE. Honda tries his best in making a meteorite cinematic, but in the end there’s just so much you can do with a mostly featureless ball of fire traveling through outer space. The miniature work is amazing, though. The construction of the Antarctic base must be one of the great cinema as handicraft scenes – because in a way you see the process itself, not just the result.”
- Daniel Shillito – ★★★☆☆
“Gorath seems like such a great idea on paper, a celestial body on a collision course with Earth and humanity must unravel a way to survive this impending threat. Unfortunately, the final product seems to be the unfortunate causality of studio meddling with its completely out-of-nowhere third-act Kaiju monster and Honda’s style at odds with many of the lighter moments of the feature. It’s a shame because for the most part Gorath does a lot right but falls to pieces the more you think about it.”
- LuciferianTower – ★★★☆☆
“I was really not sure what to make of Gorath. At many points it’s simply a generic sci-fi film, in which scientists are tackling the issue of a gigantic planet flying towards the earth. The film has plenty of negatives, there are lots of characters, most you don’t really get to know, and the pilots, who you do get to know, are unlikable, and do some strange things happen, like the pilot who goes to see his lady, then throws a picture of her dead ex out of the window, uncalled for? The method of moving the earth is… unique, but on looking back, I really enjoy it. How do you come up with that, building a field of jets on the South Pole to propel the globe out of the planets path, great stuff.”
