Plot Synopsis
In a distant future where memories can be digitized and transferred between bodies, society has become sharply divided by wealth. The poor are forced to sell their memories or bodies, while the rich exploit this system to extend their lives indefinitely. A young man wakes up in a strange place with a hole in his chest and no memory of who he is, carrying only a locket with a woman’s photo. As he journeys through this surreal world, he uncovers disturbing truths about himself and the reality he inhabits.

Reviews from Letterboxd:
-
bratpitty – ★★★★★
“Kaiba is so staggeringly imaginative that it’s overwhelming. It constantly morphs its rules, story, and visuals, but never feels incoherent. Its rubbery, cartoonish art style belies a deeply melancholic and poignant narrative about memory, identity, and power.” -
ruthlessreviews – ★★★★½
“One of the most unique and emotionally resonant animes I’ve seen. Every frame is a surreal masterpiece, and the story builds into something beautiful and heartbreaking.” -
elwoodblues – ★★★★
“A deeply moving and strange journey that starts abstract but builds a strong emotional arc. Yuasa’s style is unmatched, and Kaiba might be his most daring work.” -
ianwest – ★★★★½
“This series breaks every aesthetic rule in the book, yet still lands a profound emotional impact. I don’t know how it works, but it does — brilliantly.” -
incognitoghost – ★★★★★
“A psychedelic dive into existentialism, love, and class. It looks like a children’s cartoon but hits with the weight of a philosophical tragedy.”
