“1981 In Review – April #17. A working class young man, Tetsuo, who distrusts all rich people, falls in love with a girl, Chika, from an affluent family. He has a difficult time, but love survives despite the problems. This was a very strange Japanese film that I am not entirely sure I enjoyed. The s&xual aspect made me uncomfortable, it’s very dated. I did enjoy the soundtrack though.”

“‘Crazed Fruit’, pinku version, was somewhat surprising, IMO. The plot, while a bit shallow, is quite direct and dark. Of course, there’s more than a bit of flesh around (as per rule) but with a darker tone, both s&xually and not. There’s a bit of depth (though more in a flash) with the two main characters and their… relationship. It’s a love/hate one with plenty of hurting involved. The movie didn’t even shy away from going a bit deeper in the aggression department either. The ending felt well achieved, especially in showing the relationship’s effect, as compared with the beginning. Overall, a decent pinku with some depth and a darker and more aggressive tone than expected, which was surprising. I was bummed not to see the red dress on the poster though lol I feel like there’s something more than meets the eye to it, though (that stare between them was neat) ^_^”

“Sun Tribe classic updated as relentlessly grim pinku; characters as helpless against their own worst impulses as they are against the crude realities of class differences. If Chika and Tetsuo’s love gets forged in voyeurism and r@pe, that’s only because both of them seem to suspect that power is always going to haunt even the purest of relationships. ‘I’m weird too because I started to enjoy it midway.’ And if it’s true, as they say, that s&x is always about power and everything else is about s&x, then their relationship becomes little more than a site of condensation for a whole host of projections, resentments, and ugly baggage. A film that builds toward a literal eruption of class warfare; Tetsuo emerging bruised and broken and bloodied as he’s forced to realize that what felt like love was all along just being kept in his place.”
