“Britain has declined so thoroughly that the average gangster can no longer afford to retire to the Costa del Sol where they lead a blissful existence of lounging by the pool until they are drawn back into the life by a notorious crime boss for one last job” -

“Sexy Beast is a sort of existential gangster movie, more concerned with mood and characters caught in their feelings than its heist plot. It’s a film of visions and living in a world of violent contradiction. The lead has aged out of angry masculinity and just wants peace, but life is never so simple. Ben Kingsley’s character looms large over the picture even before he appears, just from the fear the film creates whenever he is mentioned. When he turns up, he is a proper scary cunt, with violence felt in every frame just from the way he speaks. As well as being very intense Sexy Beast also works so well because it has plenty of black comedy. There is a crude sense of humour that runs throughout and helps bring the absurd elements to a grounded level. Glazer’s direction is very stylish and flashy, which is also boosted by the bursts of loud, atmospheric music. Sexy Beast is a great, slightly atypical example of a “one last job” movie.”
