Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Rafael “Parker!!” Jovine – ★★★☆☆
“After delivering on the kung fu and swordsmanship, John Woo embraces his funny side as he goes full on slapstick in this spy comedy action film that often feels like a cross between ‘The Naked Gun’ and Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’. Even though the film does feel overly over the top in a way that is too distracting and cartoonish, I would be lying if I didn’t get a laugh here and there, especially during the third act with the whole gun gag and the guy burning his back. On that topic, there is some balls-to-the-wall action that puts to use Woo’s skills in the martial arts genre, but…” - Juju Hot Takes – ★★★☆☆
“It’s not a great movie but it’s funny to see John Woo using humor like watching a Tex Avery with his cartoon jokes for a moral about how money makes people crazy. And it’s working well.” - Wonggifs – ★★★★☆
“It’s really uneven, but when it’s funny, it’s hilarious. Ricky Hui and Richard Ng are a great team, and there are a bunch of really funny, Zuckers-style sight gags. There’s also some pretty fun action moments, though they’re all obviously played for laughs. It’s pretty dated in some respects (I could really do without comedy sound effects telegraphing jokes) but Money Crazy is a lot of fun, and between this and Plain Jane, it’s clear that John Woo had a real talent for writing comedy.”
