Title: Vampire Buster (1989)
Alternate Title: 驅魔道長
Genre: Horror, Comedy
Plot Synopsis:
In ancient China, a demon was sealed in a mystical vase after a fierce battle with a Taoist priest. Centuries later, during the Cultural Revolution, the priest’s descendant threw the vase into the ocean to prevent its power from falling into the wrong hands. Years later in Hong Kong, the vase resurfaces and is purchased at auction by a councilman—unwittingly unleashing the demon within. Possessed by the evil spirit, he begins a terrifying spree across the city. Now, a Taoist priest must rise to the occasion and battle the malevolent force with supernatural tools, rituals, and martial arts.

Reviews from Letterboxd:
-
brundlefly – ★★★☆☆
“Such glorious Hong Kong nonsense. The titular vampire is nowhere to be found, for this is a possession/exorcism movie. I’m not at all disappointed in the absence of the Dracula wannabe though because this movie contained more than enough ’80s special FX and wire-fu to keep me entertained.” -
sinistersphere – ★★★☆☆
“An exciting Hong Kong horror-comedy! The Chinese title for this film literally translates to ‘Ghostbusting Master,’ and the English title is ‘Vampire Buster.’ The Chinese title is more logical as there are none of the classic hopping and/or Dracula-type vampires in this movie.” -
HairyHaggis – ★★☆☆☆
“Definitely entertaining, though not what I expected from the title. Feels like a fun low-budget mashup of Taoist magic and slapstick horror hijinks.” -
Schlocketeer – ★★★½☆
“Lam Ching-Ying is always a win. This one has a weird mix of ghostbusting comedy and body horror that works surprisingly well if you’re into late-80s Hong Kong genre chaos.” -
CultJunkie – ★★★☆☆
“Silly and supernatural with moments of great practical effects. A very niche vibe, but fans of Taoist priest cinema will find something to enjoy.”
