Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Blake Bergman “Various Spaghetti” – ★★★★☆
“Red Spell Spells Red is a 1983 CAT III horror effort directed by Titus Ho. As deviously exploitative as the title of film presents itself at face value, this film absolutely matches that energy and then adds further to the build, as it is out to clearly shock and disgust any viewer that gets into its way. This comes with the clear acknowledgement that anyone with the faint of heart and can’t tolerate such films as ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ (1980) should steer clear of anything this thing brings to the table as there is some gruesome death in this thing. I have limited knowledge on the ensuing death of the animals in this thing but like the conversation that tends to…”

“Red Spell Spells Red is like ‘The Boxer’s Omen’, ‘Evil Dead’, and ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ had a disgusting, goop-smeared 0rgy and birthed a repulsive deformed cinematic worm. This is a truly evil Hong Kong nightmare, filled with vomit-inducing imagery and rotten animal death. From its montage of pig slaughter to scorpions being smashed to bits, the animal stuff in this is reprehensible, making this is a very rough watch. And on top of that grim real violence is a thick fucked up atmosphere that made me uncomfortable start to filthy finish. Honestly, I can’t believe the shit the actors do in this—covering their faces with real scorpions, eating live chickens…”
  3. Bob McCully – ★★★★☆
“Proto-CAT III insanity! This is one hella gnarly jungle romp, filled with all the sleaze and slime you could ever want. The plot is simple: a film crew ventures into the jungle and unleashes a deadly curse. What follows is a barrage of gore, nudity, and animal cruelty that will test even the most hardened exploitation fan. Not for the faint of heart, but if you’re into extreme cinema, this is a must-see.”
