Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Carlo V – ★★★☆☆
“Very much mid-tier Chow that gets a pass based on its cast and the fact it reminds me of better movies of its ilk. Danny Lee shows up like he’s wandered off the set of one of the other 4 movies he’d done with Chow in ’87.”
  2. Lazyboots – ★★★☆☆
“A pretty ramshackle attempt at heroic bloodshed that feels less like a feature film and more like an entire season of a soap opera condensed into 100 minutes. We’ve got too many characters (with unclear motivations), lots of loose plot threads, and just way too much going on overall. The occasional over the top action is nice, but pretty infrequent. That’d be more forgivable if the story made any sense, but oh well. I can see why they put out Tragic Hero first (both films were filmed back to back) despite it taking place after this one. Chow Yun Fat and Andy Lau still give good performances despite everything, but they’re lost in a sea of a million other characters…”
  3. Gregor Kreyca – ★★☆☆☆
“I feel pretty disappointed by this one. It’s not a very good Heroic-Bloodshed movie. The first half is slow and not very interesting. The second half gets a bit better and has some OK shootouts and action sequences. The movie has a strong cast but the characters are mostly paper-thin and uninteresting. It is obvious that the filmmakers wanted this to be a big, epic crime drama. But that feeling never really emerges. Instead it feels clumsily put together.”
