Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Lou (rhymes with wow!) – ★★★½
“Sure, this sequel to The Peacock King does feel more catered towards a younger audience, but I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing. The scope might be smaller but the movie remains unbridled with creativity. Okay, I do admit that getting rid of Yuen Biao for a large chunk of the movie is a huge oversight, but the Gloria Yip/Hiroshi Abe scenes we get in return are still fun enough. Go in with the right expectations and I’m positive you’ll end up enjoying yourself!”
  2. Bleeding Skull – ★★★
“The premise of SAGA OF THE PHOENIX is pure Lam zaniness and chaos. Continuing what THE PEACOCK KING started, the sequel combines martial arts, magic, demons, and creature effects. There are explosions and fight choreography where warriors sail through the air on wires. There is an incredible monster transformation where the Hell Concubine turns into a giant death beastie with bloody gnashing teeth. Unfortunately, all these memorable effects are shoved into a children’s movie.”
  3. deMicha – ★★½
“Ashura, the Hell Virgin, now lives with Buddhist monks who want to imprison her because her power could destroy humanity. After her plea, she is allowed to enjoy the human world for seven days. Monks Peacock and Lucky Fruit are assigned to watch over her. 1989 sequel to ‘The Peacock King’ from Hong Kong/Japan, again directed by N. Nai-Choi. Y. Biao and G. Yip return to their roles, H. Abe replaces H. Mikami. Since I already liked the predecessor in its own way, I also watched the sequel. The beginning of the plot, about the first 22 minutes, I liked.”
