Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Sean Baker – ★★★☆☆
“Just watched on Mubi. Shanty Tramp is one of the ‘almost lost’ films that Nicolas Winding Refn restored and released on his label. Like most micro-budget regional exploitation films of the time, there’s much to be desired in terms of craft, performance, etc… but not only are there some classic lines in this one but an insane ending especially for the time. Restoration is BEAUTIFUL!”
- matt lynch – ★★★★☆
“One of the great regional hicksploitation films, a fetid swamp of sweat, racism, misogyny, revival, and moonshine. Eleanor Vaill is just fierce as the title character willing to do absolutely anything to get what she wants from an entire world of men who think they know what she deserves. Sink.”
- Gentry – ★★★½☆
“Eleanor Vaill gives a tour de force performance as a lusty Southern girl stirring up racial tensions and irreligious libidos in this Dixiesploitation melodrama produced by K. Gordon Murray, directed by Cuban exploiteer Joseph G. Prieto, and co-written by the creator of the Olga films, Joseph P. Mawra. As far as 60s exploitation goes, it’s got it all: biker gangs, hypocritical preachers, abusive fathers, sexual assault, miscegenation and young adults doing the twist at the local road house.”
