Rafael “Mister Movie” Jovine – ★★★☆☆
“One of those movies where your enjoyment of it will highly depend on what you are looking for coming in. If you want a great story, then you will be pretty disappointed. However, if you want some great fighting and showcase of martial arts, then you should be satisfied.” -
Sam – ★★★★☆
“There’s a moment in this during a training sequence where Jackie does the most repulsive thing with his shoulder blades and like spreads them like wings or something??? And then the same shot is used again in a flashback as if once wasn’t horrendous enough. Other than that, dope movie.” -
Timelord007 – ★★★½
“This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. … one of Jackie Chan’s earlier & more serious flicks from the Lo Wei era, made in 1976 … the young master Jackie Chan perform his amazing kung fu mastery … the story is nothing new, …” -
threepenny – ★★☆☆☆
“‘We could do a Shaolin Training movie, or one where your sifu is an imprisoned villain that you then have to defeat, or a revenge film for your family. Or how about fighting a gang that is terrorizing the local town at the teahouse? Maybe the girl at the teahouse becomes a love interest? You learn Drunken Kung Fu? So, Jackie, which one do you want to make next?’ ‘All of them together.’ And here we are. … the wooden men are pretty damn cool and form the film’s midpoint…” -
arbel420aka – ★★★★☆
“Two years before he did Drunken Master, Jackie Chan (credited as Jacky Chan) in an unconventional role, as a young mute (muted by the trauma of seeing his dad murdered) trying to learn Kung fu in the shaolin temple. … There are a lot of beautiful outdoors shots, like training on the waterfalls, the chess players forest and others. … the story is that Jackie is so eager to learn and go through the trial of the Shaolin Wooden men … after training hard, Jackie successfully goes through the Wooden Men. He is then deceived by the prisoner who turns out to be both his teacher and mortal enemy…”
