“Got to rewatch this at a double bill event where we had a Q&A and got to meet Katsuhito Ishii. SSM&PHG was a breath of fresh air in the time of its release and continues to be one today. Its influences are clear as an absurd 90s mob-film-defying-mob-tropes, but beyond this the impacts of its action scenes are also swapped out for quiet, almost meditative moments, where its roots as a manga adaptation really shine. Ishii briefly spoke about conceding to reality when doing live action vs animation, but he’s truly one of the few directors to nail the benefits of both in live action.” - lamentropy – ★★★★½
“The main plotline is a cliché – a gangsta steals money from his boss – but what the director does with this simple story is something that blows my mind. Katsuhito Ishii is a genius and I wanna kiss his unique, crazy, brilliant brain. Shoutout to his editing skills – I really love how he works with transitions and god, I had to rewatch several scenes just for the cuts sake.” - Wilson – ★★★★☆
“Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl is an absolutely great title for a movie and the film more or less lives up to it. The film is an idiosyncratic Japanese spin on the post-Tarantino comic-crime genre; relying on wacky comedy, back and forth plotting and a lot of very distinct characters crashing into each other violently. There are shootouts and standoffs, the highlight being a long sequence in a bathroom, and a lot of odd characters.”
