Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Filipe Furtado – ★★★★★
“Bresson’s materialist nightmare. The world seems to constantly engulf everyone. The amount of physical detail and focus on small gestures do add up. It is a very bleak dispiriting movie and one who understand his main character alienation even if often annoying expressed comes from a very real place, yet one of the secrets if The Devil Probably is that Bresson actually enjoys the young actors he is hanging out with and manages to forge a real connection with them, so there’s actual life there as well.”
  2. Jaime Rebanal – ★★★★★
“And I think that the loss of hope feels like it’s become even more resonant with younger viewers now than ever, especially when they’re becoming more socially conscious than ever and their genuine concerns are being dismissed out of ‘lack of world experience.’ The Devil, Probably feels like a film that’s all about how these people are led to where they are because the world around them constantly fails them. It’s a cry for help, especially as people like Antoine Monnier’s Charles are continuously being pushed around for being labelled as ‘irresponsible.’ Bresson’s film feels like a wake-up call for those who haven’t been paying attention, and it’s vindication for the people who supposedly have met and are under the spell of ‘the devil, probably.'”
  3. AIois – ★★★★★
“It’s true that something is driving us against our will. You have to go along with it. And we do go along with it. Who is it that’s making a mockery of humanity? Who’s leading us by the nose? The devil, probably. Shot right up to the top of my favorite films. Watching this made me remember how juvenile and corny optimistic nihilism is, and how I lead my life with that. I mean, I treasure that bullshit. It’s a salve. It’s necessary cringe. Regular, educated, well-adjusted people everywhere cope with the utter unknowability and hostility of life by contriving their own meanings and call themself ‘healthy’ in the process.”
