Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. MUBI US – ★★★★☆
“For her scandalous directorial debut, Nelly Kaplan waged a battle against the patriarchy—and French censors!—with her anarchic heroine, envisioned as a modern-day witch. A Very Curious Girl is a subversive, feminist fairy tale that remains as radical today as it was in 1969.”
  2. Sydney Jenkins – ★★★★☆
“Nelly Kaplan de-romanticizes the trope of the woman who sells her body to save her soul by way of explosive, hilarious impudence in her first film. Marie, played by Bernadette Lafont, whose insouciance barely masks her seething contempt, is a caretaker for the rich landowner, Irene. Years of hard labor, backstabbing by the hypocritical villagers and her employer, and finally, the death of her mother, lead Marie to take revenge by selling her body to the same men who oppressed her, turning the tables on them with a wicked smile.”
  3. Rokhl Kafrissen – ★★★★☆
“Part feminist folk horror masterpiece, part surrealist autobiographical allegory, Nelly Kaplan’s A Very Curious Girl turns 50 this year and still feels as fresh, and necessary, as the day it was released.”
