Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Lou – ★★★½
“I wanted to revisit this bonkers Shaw Brothers flick to see if I could make more sense out of it this time, and the answer is still no. It is very messy in the way it tells its story. It can still be a lot of fun though, if you just let the whole thing wash over you. Wild stuff!”

  2. Gregor Kreyca – ★★★½
“The story and the characters are really nothing to write home about. In fact, the whole plot is a convoluted mess. It’s the visuals though where this movie really shines. Imaginative sets and Mario Bava-esque lighting create a wonderful eerie atmosphere. The swordplay fights are also very well done. Fast, ferocious and quite bloody at times.”

  3. Lexzilla – ★★★½
“Something about a demon king’s blood, a red parrot, three wishes, missing treasure, royal intrigue and murders. Can’t be more precise than that because this is a wild and messy ride. Anyway, the fun here isn’t in the intricate plotting or lack of it; it’s in the spectacle in all its weird glory.”

  4. Andrew Pragasam – ★★★
“An eerily atmospheric gross-out swordplay sex-horror movie. While searching for the Emperor’s stolen jewels, Chief of the Imperial Vault Guo Fan encounters the titular demon and asks to be granted possession of the missing treasure. He gets his wish but pays the price with the loss of his young son and is driven insane.”

  5. The Spinning Image – ★★★
“Bloody Parrot is not Shaw Brothers’ answer to a certain Monty Python sketch, but the name of a wish-granting supernatural being in this eerily atmospheric gross-out swordplay s&x-horror movie.”
