Title: Bubblegum Crisis (1987–1991)

Genre: Cyberpunk / Mecha / Animation

Plot Synopsis
MegaTokyo is rebuilding after a devastating earthquake that flattened much of the city. A powerful megacorporation, Genom, mass-produces biomechanical creatures called Boomers to aid in the city’s reconstruction. When the Boomers malfunction or are used as weapons, a special police unit called the AD Police struggles to contain the threat. Four women from divergent backgrounds form a clandestine group known as the Knight Sabers. Equipped with powered exoskeleton “hard suits,” they take on the task of fighting rogue Boomers and confronting the dark schemes of Genom, often outpacing the law in their efforts to protect the city’s fragile balance.

“This OVA has the most 80s anime soundtrack possible and I mean that in the best possible way”

  4. Tao A★★★★
“Anime from the 80s are such a fucking MOOD. Each of the eight high-octane, action-packed episodes is just filled to the absolute brim with these certified bangers that they’ve got cooked up for us playing and as far as I can tell the same song never plays for more than once. The first 4 episodes has the best and MOST cyberpunk atmosphere I’ve seen in fiction (that includes the likes of Blade Runner and Akira) so it’s almost sad to see the last 4 episodes depart from it and to a more traditional mecha anime aesthetic; with the last episode being some straight up Magical Girl shit complete with these pastel Sailor Moon backgrounds. I mean here at the anime HQ we fuck with all that shit but I could see how some would find these shifts in tone and style a bit jarring.”

“Finally finished with watching this anime. I really liked it a lot, it’s a very well made anime to bad that it’s only 8 episodes long.”

Meta Description:
A stylish 1980s cyberpunk OVA where four women in powered hard-suits fight rogue biomechanical “Boomers” for justice against a corrupt megacorporation in the neon-lit ruins of MegaTokyo.
