Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Filipe Furtado – ★★★★☆
“Life’s gamble. All those possible futures, all ending in loss. 1982 was a very unlikely year for Kinji Fukasaku as he made two of his most bitter and destructive films, only one a film industry satire (Fall Guy) and the other a romantic melodrama (Lovers Lost). There’s relatively little actual violence in either, but both end in preordained appointments with death. Lovers Lost is taken by a mood of decadence, a certainty that every life’s better hands will always end in loss.”
  2. ALISTAIR LEACH – ★★★★☆
“Having now seen half of the films Fukasaku made in the 1980s, possibly his strangest, most varied decade (after the success of the 1970s), I think this is the most enjoyable. The movie is very leisurely paced, but I was never bored. The characters are all interesting, and the setting of Osaka’s Dotonbori district is a character in itself.”
  3. lilfilm – ★★★☆☆
“A melancholic tale of forbidden love set against the bustling backdrop of Osaka. Fukasaku’s direction captures the essence of the era, and the performances are compelling. However, the pacing might be a bit slow for some viewers.”
