c h r i s – ★★★☆☆
“Absolutely was not the dweller-in-the-gutter horror movie I was thinking and hoping for, and not nearly as fun or over the top as the majority of Lam Nai-Choi’s filmography. This overlooked Hong Kong actioner initially confuses you with its character introduction—too many characters, so little time—and three separate convoluted subplots; a hitman seeking vengeance on a crime lord, a police duo hunting down said crime lord, and a group of gangsters interested in performing a heist, there is way too much going on! An entire movie following Jason Pai Piao as a voracious hitman with a heavy motive worn on his sleeve would have easily been enough to get the blood pumping, but naturally, Lam knows exactly how to effortlessly attract your attention with a gritty atmosphere and throwing in timely hard-hitting fight sequences to fill the void.”
Meta Description:
A gritty 1983 Hong Kong crime thriller from director Lam Nai-Choi, Men from the Gutter intertwines police drama, vengeance, and an intense armored heist in a violent urban underworld.
