Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. Scumbalina – ★★★★½
“This seemed infinitely more terrifying the first time around but I didn’t love it any less. What makes Occult stand out in a sea of mostly mediocre found footage films/fake documentaries is how natural it feels, aside from the computer generated ghosty sightings, the people seem real because they mostly are, and the movements and conversations are organic. Starting as a documentary on a seemingly random mass stabbing and a chance meeting with the only survivor, it unravels into a mystery of ancient evils/diet lovecraft. The survivor claims to have been ‘touched by God’ after his attack and experiences strange ‘miracles’ daily. The man is homeless so the film crew lets him stay in the studio space in exchange for interviews and the story gets weirder and weirder. The ending is a bit of a letdown but the journey is worth it.”
  2. Gregory⛧Joseph – ★★★★★
“Weird fiction/Junji Ito fluent, Aum Shinrikyo attack x10 by 2 guys who eat dollar store ramen, see worms on a projector floating in the sky, and have a ‘miracle’ happen to them every day. The film crew is so nonchalant about the whole thing, which makes it even more unsettling. The final act is a descent into madness that left me speechless. Highly recommend for fans of cosmic horror.”
  3. nathaxnne [hiatus] – ★★★½
“Kiyoshi Kurosawa, playing himself as both horror film-maker and known expert in Lovecraftian Animist Petroglyphs might be the best (non-Cronenberg) director cameo ever? The film starts off slow but builds an atmosphere of dread that is hard to shake off. The blending of reality and fiction is seamless, making it one of the more effective found footage films I’ve seen.”
