Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. chavel – ★★☆☆☆ “A global pandemic has knocked out most of the world leaving behind some dueling urban tribes on the Atlantic coast in the dystopian 2012-set The Ultimate Warrior, surprisingly starring Max von Sydow as the Baron and the very stoic Yul Brynner as a long-time bruiser in-between alliances. How stoic is Brynner? He stands stoically all day still as a statue advertising his for-hire services. The Baron believes this warrior could help protect his vegan tribe against the Carrot gang (led by William Smith), and to acquire him he lays out his sweet offer: This Warrior receives a plot of land in the country and the Baron’s daughter as his wife. The film is a bit of a slog, but the cast is interesting, and the film is a bit of a precursor to the Mad Max series.”
  2. MichaelEternity – ★★★☆☆ “A post-apocalyptic action movie that predates the ‘Mad Max’ series, and it’s a little more low-key than that might suggest. Yul Brynner plays a stoic warrior recruited by Max von Sydow’s peaceful community to help them escape the desolate city and its violent gangs. The movie has a grimy, desolate atmosphere that’s effective, and Brynner is appropriately badass in the lead role. The action scenes are sparse but well-executed, and the story has a simple, straightforward appeal. It’s not a classic, but it’s a solid entry in the genre.”
  3. Fritz – ★★★☆☆ “The Ultimate Warrior is a decent post-apocalyptic thriller with a strong performance by Yul Brynner. The film’s depiction of a desolate future is effective, and the action scenes are well done. The story is a bit thin, but it’s an entertaining watch for fans of the genre.”
