Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Michael Shawn – ★★★★½
“A super-unique sci-fi film with adorable, lovable characters and a crazy entertaining story. I’m so onboard with René Laloux’s vision in his films that I have seen thus far. They’re quirky and intelligent, something I wish could be said for more animation nowadays. I also love that French animation isn’t afraid to go to some dark places and address adult themes.”
- Le Sheriff – ★★★★☆
“‘Close your eyes humans, and open your minds.’ In René Laloux’s ‘Les maîtres du temps’ (lit. Time Masters), thoughts have smell, intentions have colors, and the bad guys are made of ‘pure thoughts’ destroying individualism, and it’s not corny a second because the film doesn’t pretend to be deeper than it is. The kind of contemplative philo-psychedelic sci-fi stuff where abstract concepts get embodied. I just love it.”
- Darkmoon99 – ★★★★☆
“An absolutely fascinating sci-fi adventure. The titular Time Masters are not a present story element until the last 10 minutes of the film (making those last 10 minutes quite the shocking revelation). The eye-catching faceless white angel of the cover isn’t particularly relevant to the film’s narrative either, not that that’s a problem, I quite like the film’s loose structure with consistent almost episodic adventures all linking into one another.”
