Reviews from Letterboxd

  1. Dan Patron★★★☆☆
“This seems to be a little known martial arts film by Sun Chung. I certainly wouldn’t have noticed it if I didn’t select The Master Strikes Back for a challenge, and it mentioned being an unofficial sequel to this one. It stars Ti Lung as the titular instructor, Master Wong, who is the best in the land. There are two warring clans, the Mong and the Chows, who can’t seem to get along at all, mainly because the Mong clan is basically pure evil. Wong doesn’t discriminate when it comes to training though, and when he refuses to teach solely the Mong clan, they frame him for involvement in an affair and he is forced to fight for his honor, accidentally killing his drunken accuser. The Mong clan offers him sanctuary, which he gladly takes, but slowly realizes that he’s not necessarily surrounded by the nicest of people. It’s pretty good! Ti Lung is a good fighter and a charismatic enough actor in the lead, and luckily the fight choreography is solid enough to go along with his abilities. Lung’s character takes Chow Ping under his wing eventually and trains him to help in his battle against the Mong clan. The movie does drag in the second half, as there is a fair amount of time spent in training montages as Ping gets up to speed. I love these parts though where people just isolate themselves in an abandoned monastery or temple or whatever, to only train for years. This film is potentially most notable because it was the first Shaw Brothers film partly shot with a steadicam, so there’s your fun fact for the day.”

  2. AThousandSons★★★☆☆
“Fairly pedestrian Shaw Brothers flick starring Lung Ti, Yu Wang, and Feng Ku. Lung plays a righteous martial arts instructor that is framed in order to teach the Shaolin Pole to the bad guys. While the initial set up is similar to Yojimbo, the differences make The Kung Fu Instructor stand on its own. Action director Tang Chia does a good job; he’d direct three films of his own, but it is the steadicam shots that stand out the most. Good for a rental, but not a Shaw film with which to introduce others.”

  3. MrJago★★★½
“Shaw Brothers must have been a great training ground for directors. There are some really fun technical aspects in this movie. Best parts are a great training session with a goateed Ti Lung and his students and the fantastic final fight.”
