Love in Sampan (1992)
Reviews from Letterboxd:
- PenguinBoss – ★★★★☆
“A very tragic s***** awakening movie, with our heroine forced into awful situations beyond her control. I liked how she was very ordinary looking, helped everything seem more real. Has the demented CAT III energy while still somehow possessing a real heart and sympathy for the characters, it’s a nice balance.” - Bruce Rogers – ★★★☆☆
“Mostly soft core held together by a plot that was a really good, if overly lurid, updated approximation of nineteenth century Naturalism. S** is mostly transactional at best and usually coerced but it is the prime motivator for the entire plot. Somehow it all kinda worked for me but I will admit to zoning out at points; there are only so many Dutch angels of nakedness that I can process.” - Dave Jackson – ★★★☆☆
“Softcore s** doesn’t get much more depressing than Love in Sampan. This grim Cat III follows the god-awful life of Kiu (Asuka Tamami), a young woman living in a conservative village. In order for her family to continue paying for her brother’s education, Kiu is forced to marry a local ‘bad guy’, Wong (Leung Siu-Dik). She cheats on Wong on her wedding night with a handsome young guy (Daniel Chung Sai-Kuen), who is subsequently drowned by Wong and his cronies. Things only get worse after that.”

R@pe Trap (1998)
Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Cathrine22 – ★★★☆☆
“Interesting premise that starts out really strong. Unfortunately, the second half becomes a cheesy court melodrama.” - Bruce Rogers – ★★★½☆
“This has more in common with a nineties erotic thriller like Consenting Adult than the unfortunate title could lead you to assume. A strangely sentimental subplot dominates the later part of the film that should have been filled more and more with ludicrous narrative twists but comes off as half-baked courtroom drama.” - hotsake – ★★★★☆
“A surprisingly well-made dramatic crime thriller that is not nearly as sleazy as the title suggests. For the most part, it’s well-acted and doesn’t really resort to the usual Hong Kong throwaway comedy bits that many films of this nature and time period fell victim to.”
