  1. Mister Movie★★☆☆☆
“One of those movies where the BTS is more fascinating than the film itself. Also, I wasn’t a big fan of Lo Wei already, but dude, blackmailing Chan and folks by calling triads and stuff like that. I don’t care if he did some awesome Bruce Lee films; he can go and screw himself. Sure, Chan was put in a hard position by having to choose between him and Golden Harvest, but still. Triads? That’s just too much!
Anyway, this movie wasn’t near as good as the original. There are some decent fight sequences, but nothing memorable. You got weird stuff like stand-ins and doubles in fake beards. Differently from Cracked Fingers, any of the whole Frankenstein stuff they had to do with this film worked. A lot of the story and even the fighting are pretty underwhelming and not engaging at all. Way too silly and none of the humor works. A real disappointment.”

  2. Chris Brown★★☆☆☆
“I did expect to somewhat enjoy this. It’s a martial arts film. Jackie Chan is in it, whether he wanted to be or not. And it might be neato to see how the filmmaker tried to cover up that Jackie wasn’t in the film for a large portion.
But no, the film is a mess. I cannot blame Jackie for walking off the set when he saw how shoddily and inept they were making the sequel to one of his best films (at the time). And I’m sure being offered a huge payday helped his departure too.
I will admit, this is a curiosity. I was a little stunned at how bad the padding was, especially when there were so many scenes that seemed incomplete. For example, the bad guys have been hunting down a character for years. Years! Then out of the blue, we cut to them killing him. No scene showing how they found him. No intro to the fight. No logic whatsoever.
And the fact that this was a factory restart rather than a continuation of the original was disappointing as well.
But, at least it looks fantastic in all it’s non-fantasticness on Criterion blu-ray.”

“Hilarious that they released this film since Jackie Chan walked out 2/3 of the way through shooting. Even more hilarious that they decided to “work around” that problem and thought this would end well. Most hilarious of all: Criterion has this as part of their Jackie Chan collection on their streaming service.
