   “Maybe I enjoyed this as much as I did because I had next to zero expectations, or because I simply love almost all things Shinya Tsukamoto and Ryūhei Matsuda… But I thought this was pretty neat. It is less unconventional than Tsukamoto’s other works, for sure, but his energetic and chaotic filmmaking style still shines and impresses.”

   “‘Please help me, Nightmare Detective,’ says poor Yukie (Yui Miura) after a malevolent spirit of her dead friend comes to haunt her. ‘Shit, shit,’ remarks Kyoichi (Ryuhei Matsuda reprising his role) as he hears her cries. Thus begins a return trip for Shinya Tsukamoto to his commercial exercise in Nightmare Detective 2.”

   “Japanuary 2024: Shinya Tsukamoto. Do you like films where Ryuhei Matsuda portrays an emo/depressed/troubled character? Do the bigger scares/creepy moments from the Ring or Ju-on franchises get under your skin and linger on your mind? If the performances and atmosphere of a film are excellent, can you look past a convoluted narrative? If yes, strongly consider Nightmare Detective and Nightmare Detective 2.”
