Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Gabriel Jewett – ★★★★☆
“I really love kid-friendly horror films. ‘The Willies’ will always be my absolute favorite, but ‘Stepmonster’ is a good contender. Granted, the kid is a pervert and characters do die, but you could go with a lot more graphic, let’s be honest here. This has a stacked cast, the always great Alan Thicke who I still miss, and Corey Feldman is even there as a pseudo Frog brother. This is right around the downfall of his career, but he was still kind of a household name at this point. This movie feels like a classic ’80s horror but just run through a ’90s kids film filter; it’s pretty special.” - Parker – ★★★½☆
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned from movies, it’s that the best way to kill a monster is to get help from comic books and Corey Feldman.” - Brett Blake – ★★★☆☆
“A mildly-diverting Roger Corman production that feels extremely ‘early ’90s TV.’ It plays with the classic tropes of a kid not liking/trusting a parent’s new spouse, and there’s some minor enjoyment to be had in that, particularly because it has a bit of a playful and mischievous tone. There’s also an evident love of comic books in here, which is a fun added element. Nice performance from George Gaynes, too. Overall, not bad!”
