Reviews from Letterboxd:

  1. mia – ★★★★☆
“A cosy, colourful and pleasant little Cinderella-like film. The Hepburn-esque dresses the girls wear, the shop window displaying ‘western clothes’, the slow dance in the ballroom, the records they listen to, and the songs they sing, which are also in English, all emphasize this influence. I was a bit surprised to find out that this was made in 1957; thought it was from the mid-60s. It just looks so modern. I loved the colors.”

“A charming and heartwarming story that beautifully captures the essence of post-war Japan. The performances are sincere, and the direction by Masumura is both sensitive and insightful. A delightful watch for fans of classic cinema.”
