Reviews from Letterboxd:
- Gregor Kreyca – ★★★☆☆
“While I don’t think that this is a great movie, this sequel to Rich and Famous is a considerable step up. It’s shorter, leaner, much more focus and a lot more of interest happens. I like Alex Man’s character going full supervillain. He plays a real psycho here and I dig Chow Yun-fat’s final words to him. ‘Alive or dead, you’ll always be an arsehole.’ Lol! The film also has a great action showdown worthy of a real Heroic-bloodshed movie. All in all I would say that both movies are far from perfect but this one was far less boring and actually entertained me for the most part. My advice, if you are a fan of the genre, check this one out and skip the first one. If however you, like me, have bought the Eureka set featuring both movies, might as well watch them both. Don’t expect too much but this one at least ends on a high note.” - Sean Gilman – ★★☆☆☆
“Honestly the only interesting thing about this is that it, the sequel to Rich and Famous, was actually released three months before Rich and Famous, I guess because Chow Yun-fat is in it a bit more (Andy Lau having been shipped off to an island paradise for most of the movie) and they wanted to capitalize on his stardom after A Better Tomorrow. It was released a week after City on Fire too, which must have added to the weirdness of Danny Lee’s brief appearances. Pretty much everything about it is incompetent though, more like a TV movie version of a Woo or Lam movie, or a gangster soap opera with a crazy shootout tacked onto the end, than anything else.” - Sean – ★★★☆☆
“About more heroic bloodshed shenanigans revolving around the characters from Rich and Famous, this was basically okay…? I guess? The consensus here seems to be that it’s a clear upgrade over Rich and Famous, which I’m a bit baffled by. The problem is that nothing of consequence happens for long stretches of the movie; all the heavy lifting in terms of developing the characters and their conflicts was established in the first installment, and not much happens to change any of that here. Which means that the vast majority of the film is basically narrative wheel-spinning, with none of the characters on either side of the conflict having all that much to do other than be increasingly mad at each other until the final showdown. Which, to be fair, is pretty great, but I don’t know if it’s worth the wait.”
