Reviews from Letterboxd

  1. TheAce0fHearts★★★★★
“One of the best war movies I’ve watched. It captures both Doss’s miracle saves and the horror of those he couldn’t. The religious element was handled well, showing his conviction despite ridicule. While the film only depicts a fraction of his rescues, it powerfully honors his dedication and heroism.”

  2. Stacey B★★★★☆
“A perfect ‘dad movie.’ My dad always watches it on cable even though he owns the DVD. It sits alongside classics like ‘Armageddon’ and ‘Forrest Gump’ in that category. A great film for family viewing.”

  3. Evan★★★★½
“Possibly the most realistic portrayal of war I’ve seen. Mel Gibson proves himself again as a skilled director. Garfield is phenomenal, Vaughn surprises in a serious role, and Palmer shines in her limited screen time. The battle sequences are masterful, terrifying, and unforgettable.”

  4. Casper★★★★☆
“A moving reminder that one person’s courage matters. Garfield gives an unforgettable performance, and Gibson’s direction delivers brutal, immersive combat scenes. Rather than glorifying war, it highlights the staggering valor of ordinary people.”

  5. esther★☆☆☆☆
“An incoherent and hypocritical film. It glorifies violence while celebrating pacifism, portrays Doss as a Christ figure, and depicts Japanese soldiers in dehumanizing ways. Despite Doss’s real heroism, the movie leans heavily into Gibson’s problematic themes.”

Meta Description:
A gripping true-story war drama of Desmond Doss, a medic who saved lives without firing a weapon, blending faith, sacrifice, and harrowing battle realism.
